Oxley Park Golf Club is the Emerald Gem of the City of Wolverhampton.
Oxley Park is a private golf club adjacent to the A449 some two miles from the centre of Wolverhampton and a similar distance from Junction 2 of the M54. It is best described as an eighteen hole undulating park land course of 6222 yards, Par 71, S.S.S. 70. The holes are varied and testing with over eighty bunkers to punish a wayward shot. Many fairways are tree lined so there is a premium on straight hitting.
An early owner of the land on which the course was eventually built was Thomas Huskission M.P. 1770 – 1830, who is best remembered as being the first man in the world to be killed in a railway accident.
Several owners later in 1912, the Oxley Park Golf club was formed by a group of local entrepreneurs including the then owner, Judge Henry Staveley Hill K.C., M.P. They employed Harry Shapland Colt, an international course designer to lay down the first eighteen holes. He is best known for the new course at Sunningdale.
The course is played in two loops. The first finishing at the eighth, a par four of 463 yards which definitely earns its rating of stroke index 1. The second loop finishes at the eighteenth another testing par four of 417 yards with the rating of stroke index 2.
A memorable hole is the short fourteenth at the highest point of the course, an easy 126 yards with a plateau green. Club selection will vary according to the strength of the prevailing wind with six of the biggest bunkers on the course ready to accept an inaccurate shot.
